How to distinguish a real Palo Santo from a fake?
The smell of Palo Santo has been considered sacred since ancient times in places such as Peru and Ecuador. The name translates as "sacred tree" and was used by shamans during ceremonies.
Currently, the demand for real Palo Santo is growing exponentially.
This has forced many suppliers to compromise and harvest trees ahead of schedule or sell old stock that has dried out a little less than necessary.
The sacred scent of Palo Santo comes from the natural oils contained in the wood.
Over time, the wood may dry out and the oils may evaporate. But this can take quite a long time.
The Palo Santo tree lies on the ground in the forest for 4 to 10 years before it is harvested. The natural aging process leads to the development of aroma.
The answer is very simple - there are no fake Palo Santos, not in any country.
The most common problems usually involve quality control issues that make people think the product may not be real.
Palo Santo oil (liquid resin) is very difficult to extract. Therefore, chopping wood and moistening it with the oil of a sacred tree is not profitable for many reasons - both economic and other. This is a very expensive process.
Common problems
1. Since Palo Santo is a natural product, each tree will smell different. Each time you get a different tree.
2. Some suppliers may sometimes, intentionally or not, collect younger dead limbs. As a result, the smell may not be pronounced.
3. Sometimes suppliers do not sell their Palo Santo quickly as they expected. This leads to the fact that wood stocks are stored for many years and naturally the smell becomes less pronounced. Especially if the wood did not initially have a large amount of internal resin.
4. Sometimes an allergic reaction to low-quality wood can occur, especially if the wood has been stored in a warehouse for a very long time. But this is a natural process.
