Palo Santo is an aromatic incense, a natural wood that has been used for centuries by the Incas and other indigenous cultures, shamans and healers have used it in both the physical and metaphysical realms as a means of cleansing, ridding evil spirits and bad energy, it is a healing aroma and providing energy protection.
Its name literally means "holy tree". The smoke produced by combustion is believed to have both healing and energetic powers.
Palo Santo is native to Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula south of Peru and Venezuela, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Colombia, Honduras, Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. The tree belongs to the same family (Burseraceae) as frankincense and myrrh.
Crushed Palo Santo is more ground wood, but not quite a powder.
